Before the 20th century when the Dutch missionaries arrived and converted the secluded Torajan people to Christianity, they practiced Animism, the belief that non-human entities possess a spiritual essence. Despite following other religions, the Torajans still practice their ancient funeral customs which are known to be some of the most elaborate and complex in the world.
For these people, a funeral is a great celebration of life, similar to a going-away party, and is an occasion in which the entire family of the deceased, and all the members of the surrounding village take part.
I was fortunate enough to take part as well.
